چکیده

Abstract This study is an exercise in micro-scale comparison based on the semantic map approach. A constructed for meanings associated with word ‘grain’ four closely related South Mande languages: Dan Blowo, Tura, Mwan, and Wan. Although non-cognate, words show remarkable similarity their range of meanings, suggesting that newly introduced are same networks as they come to replace. Differences between languages boil down unavailability or reduced productivity particular uses one two (Wan some extent Mwan). The original network shown have become significantly Wan, a lesser Mwan. major challenge micro-comparison due small sample size idiosyncratic nature relationships, which together make it hard explore network’s internal structure. Language-internal evidence can occasionally be used compensate missing from large-scale typological sampling. Overall, approach proves promising research history has potential help lexicographers fieldworkers identify possible gaps lexical descriptions.

Character-based PSMT for Closely Related Languages

Translating unknown words between related languages using a character-based statistical machine translation model can be beneficial. In this paper, we describe a simple method to combine character-based models with standard word-based models to increase the coverage of a phrase-based SMT system. Using this approach, we can show a modest improvement when translating between Norwegian and Swedish...

Learning Translation Templates for Closely Related Languages

Many researchers have worked on example-based machine translation and different techniques have been investigated in the area. In literature, a method of using translation templates learned from bilingual example pairs was proposed. The paper investigates the possibility of applying the same idea for close languages where word order is preserved. In addition to applying the original algorithm f...

Pooling ASR data for closely related languages

We describe several experiments that were conducted to assess the viability of data pooling as a means to improve speech-recognition performance for under-resourced languages. Two groups of closely related languages from the Southern Bantu language family were studied, and our tests involved phoneme recognition on telephone speech using standard tied-triphone Hidden Markov Models. Approximately...
